ACADEMIC SUPPORTS
At Urban College & Career Preparatory Charter School, academic support is delivered through a structured Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) designed to ensure every student receives the instruction and support needed to succeed. Support begins in the classroom with strong, grade-level teaching, where teachers regularly check for understanding, monitor progress, and adjust instruction to meet student needs, including providing small-group or targeted support during class. When additional support is needed, the school responds quickly by providing more focused small-group or individualized interventions while students continue engaging with grade-level content. Student progress is reviewed regularly by a team to ensure supports are effective and adjusted as needed, allowing the school to provide timely, responsive support that promotes continuous growth and success for all students.
HOW SUPPORT WORKS
We will use a structured process to make sure every student gets the right support at the right time.
- Screening: All students will be assessed using i-Ready to understand their current skill levels and identify any areas where support may be needed.
- Progress Monitoring: Teachers will regularly check student progress to see what is working and where adjustments are needed.
- Intervention Cycles: Students who need extra support will receive targeted instruction in small groups for a set period of time (typically 6–8 weeks).
- Movement Between Levels of Support: As students grow and improve, support will be adjusted. Students may receive more support, less support, or return fully to core instruction based on their progress.
LEVELS OF SUPPORT
Tier 1 – Support for All Students
Every student receives strong, grade-level instruction in the classroom. Teachers use regular check-ins to make sure students are learning and provide support as needed during lessons.
Tier 2 – Small Group Support
Some students may need extra help to build specific skills. These students receive additional support in small groups, focused on targeted areas, while continuing their regular classroom learning.
Tier 3 – Individualized Support
A small number of students may need more intensive, individualized support. These supports are tailored to the student’s specific needs and may include more frequent sessions and closer progress monitoring.
TYPES OF SUPPORT
We provide different types of support to meet each student’s needs and help them succeed in school:
- Academic Support: Extra help in reading and math to strengthen skills and build confidence.
- Behavioral Support: Guidance and strategies to help students make positive choices and build strong habits.
- Attendance Support: Partnering with families to support consistent school attendance and address barriers early.
- Social-Emotional Support: Helping students manage emotions, build relationships, and develop skills for overall well-being.
TEAM APPROACH
Supporting each student is a shared responsibility. Our team works together to make sure students receive the right support at the right time and that families are kept informed every step of the way.
- Teachers: Monitor student progress daily, provide high-quality instruction, and offer additional support within the classroom.
- Interventionists: Deliver targeted small-group or individualized support to help students build specific academic skills.
- Student Success Team: A team of educators and support staff who meet regularly to review student data, identify needs, and plan next steps for support.
- Family Communication: Families are kept informed and involved through regular updates, meetings, and collaboration to support student success both in and out of school.
